FROM UNDER THE UMBRELLA
WHAT’S NEW & GOOD

September gave us a little bit of everything.

There were new shows, old favorites pulled back out of the archives, the WDRT pledge drive, a brief and extremely unwanted air-conditioning adventure, some much-needed time away, and a chance to see family, regroup, and remember that occasionally even radio weirdos need to leave the studio.

We also opened a few windows.

Literally? Metaphorically? Probably both.

Behind the scenes, we kept building too: creating evergreen pieces, tidying up corners of the Velvet universe, and working on things that may not appear immediately, but will quietly turn up later when you least expect them.

A little breathing room also gave us time to start wandering back into some of the projects waiting behind the curtain, including The Masquerade of Shadows, more Gala Violet creations, new artwork, new stories, and whatever else decides to show up once we start pulling on loose threads.

Meanwhile, Dimension 5 Snacks is back in the kitchen with new recipes every week, because apparently our strange little universe also needed snacks.

And all across Velvet Umbrella, things are shifting.

New pages.
New ideas.
New transmissions.

Some familiar voices.

Maybe one familiar character.

October is coming.
And something is already knocking.

This week begins somewhere past the orchard. The road gets stranger. A door appears. Someone leaves an invitation. And by the time Petals & Hooks arrives, we have apparently decided the only reasonable response is to turn the music up and dance.

Three transmissions. One increasingly questionable journey.

Wednesday wanders beyond the orchard. Friday overnight opens the invitation. And after that... well. Fuck it. We're dancing.

Wednesday β€’ Eclectic Wonderland

Somewhere Past the Orchard

A Wisconsin road trip slips sideways into another story. Autumn roads, strange turns, music between destinations, and the persistent feeling that the map knows something we don't.

Fuck-It, We're Dancing

At some point, you can stop trying to understand the week. Sometimes the answer is not another clue, another map, or another strange door. Sometimes the answer is volume. Movement. A questionable decision made with excellent rhythm. Fuck it. We're dancing.

First contact rarely happens the way anyone expects. Sometimes there is a signal. Sometimes there is silence. Sometimes there is a tractor beam, an awkward apology, and several unanswered questions. This week opens the first half of the story.

Two transmissions. One first contact.

Wednesday looks up. Friday goes farther out. And somewhere between the two, the signal changes.

Wednesday β€’ Eclectic Wonderland

We Apologize for the Tractor Beam

Something has apparently gone slightly wrong with First Contact. Expect extraterrestrial detours, strange signals, questionable interstellar etiquette, and the sort of musical decisions that happen when nobody remembers where the manual went.

A Brief Note Regarding the Timeline

First Contact began last week.
The Extraterrestrial Encore happened earlier.

Both statements are apparently true.

There was time travel involved. We suggest accepting this before the paperwork gets worse.
πŸ“‘ Apparently the Aliens Helped With the Pledge Drive

Last week was WDRT's pledge drive, and somewhere between the tractor beam, the time travel, and our brief disappearance from the schedule, our extraterrestrial visitors decided to help.

We have chosen not to ask why several pledge forms now contain coordinates.

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies πŸͺ

Chewy oatmeal cookies made with maple syrup, almond-hazelnut butter, dark chocolate chips, walnuts, and chia seeds for a wholesome little snack with plenty of personality.

Real ingredients. Big flavor. No disappointments.

Dairy-Free Egg-Free Refined Sugar-Free Gluten-Free Option Bake: 10–12 Minutes
Open the Full Recipe ✨

Ingredients

  • β…“ cup almond-hazelnut butter
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil, melted
  • Β½ cup pure maple syrup
  • β…“ cup unsweetened non-dairy milk of choice
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup sprouted spelt flour, or almond flour for gluten-free
  • 1 cup rolled oats, ideally sprouted
  • Β½ teaspoon baking soda
  • Β½ teaspoon salt
  • Β½ cup dairy-free dark chocolate chips
  • Β½ cup chopped raw walnuts
  • 1–2 tablespoons chia seeds

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350Β°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the almond-hazelnut butter, melted coconut oil, maple syrup, non-dairy milk, and vanilla until smooth.
  3. Add the flour, rolled oats, baking soda, salt, chocolate chips, and walnuts. Stir until evenly combined.
  4. Mix in 1 tablespoon of chia seeds. If the batter still feels a little wet, add the second tablespoon.
  5. Spoon the batter onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little room between cookies.
  6. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the tops and edges begin to brown.
  7. Remove from the oven and let the cookies rest for about 10 minutes before transferring them to a plate or cooling rack.
Important Maple Note: Do not replace the maple syrup with granulated sugar. The liquid from the maple syrup is part of the texture, and dry sugar can make these cookies turn out too dry.
Gluten-Free Version: Use almond flour in place of the sprouted spelt flour and make sure your rolled oats are certified gluten-free.
Cookie Texture Tip: The cookies will continue to firm up as they cool, so resist the urge to overbake them if you want that soft, chewy center.

Delicious Little Additions

  • Extra dark chocolate chips
  • Chopped pecans instead of walnuts
  • A pinch of cinnamon
  • A sprinkle of flaky sea salt
  • Unsweetened shredded coconut
  • A little extra vanilla

Gluten-Free Makes 24 Cupcakes Prep: 25 Minutes Bake: 20 Minutes Buttercream Frosting
Open the Full Recipe ✨

Cupcake Ingredients

  • 2Β½ cups gluten-free flour blend
  • Β½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1Β½ cups sugar, or coconut palm sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • Β½ cup milk
  • 1 cup sour cream, or Greek yogurt
  • 2 teaspoons gluten-free vanilla extract
  • 1 ounce red food coloring, or preferred natural alternative

Buttercream Frosting

  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 3 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1–2 tablespoons milk, as needed

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350Β°F.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the gluten-free flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar for about 5 minutes, or until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time.
  5. Add the milk, sour cream or Greek yogurt, red food coloring, and vanilla. Mix until just blended.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.
  7. Spoon the batter evenly into greased or lined muffin pans.
  8. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the cupcakes cool completely before frosting.

Buttercream Frosting

  1. Add the powdered sugar, softened butter, vanilla, and 1 tablespoon of milk to a mixer bowl.
  2. Begin mixing on the lowest speed.
  3. Once the butter and sugar are incorporated, gradually increase the speed and beat until light and fluffy.
  4. If the frosting feels too thick or dry, add additional milk a little at a time.
  5. Taste and adjust the vanilla or milk until the frosting reaches the flavor and consistency you like.
  6. Frost the completely cooled cupcakes and finish with red sprinkles or red velvet crumbs.
Flour Note: This recipe was adapted using Bob’s Red Mill 1-to-1 Gluten-Free Baking Flour. Different gluten-free flour blends can absorb liquid differently, so texture may vary slightly.
Sugar Swap: Coconut palm sugar can be substituted for white sugar. It may create a slightly deeper flavor and darker red velvet color.
Sour Cream Swap: Greek yogurt works beautifully in place of sour cream and helps keep the cupcakes soft and moist.
Coloring Note: We like Color Kitchen Food Colors from Nature for a more naturally derived red coloring option.

Lovely Little Additions

  • Red velvet cake crumbs
  • Heart sprinkles
  • Dark chocolate curls
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Fresh raspberries or strawberries
  • A tiny dusting of cocoa powder
πŸ§ͺ Test Kitchen Notes

Red velvet is not required to justify itself as health food.

Gluten-Free Brownies

Rich, fudgy, chocolatey little squares made with almond flour, cacao, coconut sugar, and plenty of chocolate chips.

A little square of comfort... because chocolate helps.

Gluten-Free Grain-Free Dairy-Free Vegan Option Bake: About 20 Minutes
Open the Full Recipe ✨

Ingredients

  • 3 cups almond flour
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil, melted
  • β…“ cup coconut sugar
  • Β½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ΒΌ cup cacao powder
  • β…“ cup egg whites
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • ½–1 cup almond milk, added gradually
  • Β½ cup vegan chocolate chips
  • Optional: Stevia to taste, if you prefer a sweeter brownie
Sweetness Note: We like these with the coconut sugar and chocolate chips alone. If you prefer a sweeter brownie, add a little Stevia to taste rather than automatically using all four packets.

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350Β°F and lightly grease your baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, combine almond flour, melted coconut oil, coconut sugar, vanilla, cacao powder, egg whites, baking powder, and sea salt.
  3. Slowly add almond milk, a little at a time, stirring until the batter becomes smooth but remains thick. You may not need the full cup.
  4. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  5. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
  6. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until the center is set and a tester comes out with moist crumbs rather than wet batter.
  7. Allow the brownies to cool before slicing into squares.
Vegan Variation: The original recipe uses egg whites. For a vegan version, use a baking-friendly egg replacement such as aquafaba or a flax-based substitute, adjusting the liquid as needed so the batter stays thick.
Brownie Texture Tip: For fudgier brownies, pull them when the center is just set. For a cakier texture, let them bake a few minutes longer.

Delicious Little Additions

  • Chopped walnuts or pecans
  • Extra dark chocolate chips
  • A sprinkle of flaky sea salt
  • Espresso powder for deeper chocolate flavor
  • A swirl of almond or peanut butter
  • Fresh raspberries on the side

Cupcake Ingredients

  • 1Β½ cups gluten-free flour blend with xanthan gum
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • Β½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Β½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Β½ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ΒΌ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ΒΌ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup pumpkin purΓ©e, not pumpkin pie filling
  • Β½ cup coconut sugar, or regular sugar
  • Β½ cup pure maple syrup
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • ΒΌ cup melted coconut oil, or another neutral oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 tablespoons butter, room temperature
  • Β½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional: pinch of cinnamon

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350Β°F. Line a 12-cup muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the gluten-free flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, whisk together the pumpkin purΓ©e, coconut sugar, maple syrup, eggs, melted coconut oil, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the cupcake liners, filling each about two-thirds full.
  6. Bake for 18–22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow the cupcakes to cool completely before frosting.
  8. To make the frosting, beat the cream cheese, butter, and vanilla until smooth.
  9. Gradually add the powdered sugar on low speed until creamy and spreadable. Add a pinch of cinnamon if desired.
  10. Frost the cooled cupcakes and finish with a little cinnamon, nutmeg, or festive fall decoration.
Frosting Tip: If the frosting feels too soft, chill it for 10–15 minutes before piping. If it feels too thick, add a tiny splash of milk or cream.
Pumpkin Note: Use plain pumpkin purΓ©e rather than pumpkin pie filling so you can control the sweetness and spice level yourself.

Spooky Little Additions

  • Extra cinnamon or nutmeg on top
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Chopped pecans or walnuts
  • Maple drizzle
  • Orange and black sprinkles
